Good Day On The Water

I was fishing this morning with Tim Rupli, his friend Brad Kline and Tim's son Tim. It was a cool but sunny day on the water. We were fishing for Tarpon and Snook with live bait. Sorry to say we did not hookup. We had a great time, telling fishing and hunting tales and soaking up the sun. Better luck tomorrow!!

Cool Fishing

I fished Sunday with Tim Rupli and his sons. I was really cold but the the boys hung tough and we ended up having a great day! They caught enough Snappers for dinner, also caught a Snook and jumped a dandy Tarpon.

Yesterday Don Asher and I headed out to the flats several miles offshore. We saw some Permit and Bonefish, but didn't hookup. Than we filled the box with dinner type fish and called it a day!!

Roller coaster ride.

Since my last post both the weather and the fishing have been a roller coaster ride! In my over forty years of guiding I have never had so many highs and lows in such a short time span. One day will be in the forties in the morning and two days later it will be seventy five. One day we catch ten Snook and there is no need to mention the next!!!

While fishing my friend Cecil from Ohio we landed ten Snook and a big Black Drum! A couple days later fishing with Fred Pape and Gail Guyton Fred caught a nice Permit. Yesterday we caught two beautiful Bonefish. I hope things start to calm down and regain some normalcy.

Back to normal.

Things have returned normal on the Flats. We have 65-degree water temperature and sunny skies. Fish are returning in good numbers as you would expect. I have returned to the Reef a couple of times and have had a blast every time. Yesterday I fished with 3 fellows down from the frozen north. They were not big fisherman, just wanted to get some sun and see the sights. They ended up catching a 50-pound Tarpon and a boat load of Jacks, Snappers and Ladyfish! A good time was had by all!! Another boat on the trip hooked 4 Bonefish! So fishing is starting to really heat up. Don't miss out on the rally! Lets go fishing!

When the going gets tough

It has been as cold in Key Largo as I have seen it in my 57-years. Cold weather and windy conditions make its as tough as it can be when flats fishing. So sometimes you have to think outside of the box and go in another direction. On a trip last week with longtime client Don Asher that is exactly what we did. With water temps. in the fifties Don suggested we venture out to the reef to find warmer water. This is not our thing and we were flying by the seat of our pants. We anchored the skiff in about 20-feet of water close to a patch reef and began to try our luck blind casting with the fly rod. Before it was over we landed cero mackerel, jacks and an african pompano. Blind luck, but we will take it. Have also caught some cold water bonefish.

I was on a mission for Bonefish Tarpon Unlimited today looking for dead bonefish from the cold.I only found three. That was bad enough!

It has been a week since I returned from the “Great White North”. It is just a blur to me this morning. The Club is packed to overflowing and I have been fishing everyday! This is good news!! The bad news is, the cold has followed me back here. It was in the forties this morning and blowing twenty out of the north!

We have been doing well on the fishing front. Mostly Snook and Tarpon. New Years Day we caught thirteen Snook and a Tarpon. Seven of the Snook were on fly. I can only hope the streak continues.
