Fall Update

I know all good things must come to an end, but it is hard for me to let go of this summer! I have had wonderful fishing on the AuSable and great fun with everyone up north!  In a week I will be back in the fabulous Florida Keys and ready to kick some bonefish a---.  It is always crazy getting there and preparing boats and tackle for the season!! In no time I will be back in the South Florida groove and ready for a busy winter season.

I look forward to seeing all my Ocean Reef friends and terrorizing the flats for another season! You can call me direct or contact Orvis at Ocean Reef if you would like to book a trip.

Back On The AuSable

It feels so good to be back home on the Ausable.  Between catching up on all the repairs and keeping up with all the rising trout I have been very busy! Upon my return the river was very high and dirty, but she is almost back to normal. The level is fine, but still has a little color. The insects on the other had are having a blast! Ones the fish bite and ones that bite us are all doing well!! It is hard to decide which fly to use, to many choices.

Big flies are starting to hatch in the evenings, drakes and iso’s hex can’t be far behind. I still have a few openings in late June. Call if you are interested.

Mid Winter Fun

I have been having a blast fishing lately. We have not been chasing the big three around Key Largo,  as they are in short supply at this point in time. We have just been looking for rod benders! There have been lots of trout, sharks and some nice redfish and a few snook. There has also been a good bite of mackerel and jacks. We have been catching lots of mackerel, trout and jacks on fly. Great fun!

We will soon be shifting our focus to the big three and doing some real hunting! It is all good and as I have been told my many. " The tug is the drug!"

Look forward to fishing with you at Ocean Reef Club soon.

Back On The Flats

It has been a couple of weeks since my return to Ocean Reef Club, its great to be back on the Flats again! Hurricane Sandy has had some impact on the fishing sine my return. The tides have been high and higher! With all the water it has been a little hard to sight fish for bones. We have made up for it by catching redfish and snook.

The best fish so far is a 10-pound red caught by Jessica Welch from Cleveland. On my last mission we caught 5 nice snook on fly. Water levels are returning to normal so I will start to target bones now

Can't be Fall!

It is hard to believe that tomorrow is the first day of Fall! It seems like yesterday I was returning to the AuSable from the Keys. It has been a beautiful summer, a bit hot for my taste at times. In the beginning the fishing was outstanding but along with the heat and bright sun fishing got a bit more challenging. The fishing was always great but the catching suffered. With the cool weather the last couple of weeks the fishing has improved. I had a wonderful time with all my clients who came to see me  on the AuSable this summer, but as with all good things it is coming to an end. I will be open for business as usual on November 1st at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo. I look forward to seeing you all there and having a great time on the water!

Back on the AuSable!

I finished up in the Keys with a bang! On one of my last days, on two half day trips we landed two redfish a sheephead a black drum, four tarpon and a twenty five pound permit! That was one exciting day with some very happy clients. Bonefishing also picked up at the end, so I left on a good note. It was a very uneventful ride back to Michigan. I was very glad to see the old AuSable again! And since my return fishing has been outstanding, lots of fly's and rising trout everywhere. If you are interested in a float trip just give me a ring I am willing and available for service. Tight lines, Capt Dave

Comes In and Goes Out Like a Lion

The last month has been one of the toughest of my fishing career! We have had constant wind and fishing has been challenging.
Thank God I have been fishing with lots of families and the targets have not been world records. We have had lots of jacks, snappers and groupers on hand for lots of action. There has also been a few tarpon and bonefish to keep the hardcore happy.

We are now heading into the serious portion of my season so I am keeping my fingers crossed for more target species. Last week I was fishing with a group of Orvis executives and lodge owners and had some great shots at huge tarpon! We could not talk them into eating a fly though. We also on one trip had fly's in front of a slam, same luck! We still had some great fun and comradery.

I will be here until mid may so if you are interested in Tarpon, Permit or Bonefish give me a call.
